The ring width varies round the circumference (eccentric), so the ring follows the shaft even while it is open. Type C concentric external circlip and shaft groove dimensions

The inside and outside diameters share one centre (concentric). This ring is used on a grooved shaft. The ring width is constant all the way round, so the standard covers larger designations than the eccentric type (designations 20 to 200).
