Required energy absorption of a shock absorber — From operating conditions

Required energy absorption of a shock absorber struck by a workpiece carried on a belt conveyor. The belt keeps running as the workpiece slows, so friction acts in the direction of travel and the energy to be absorbed increases accordingly.
