- Based on 5.3 "Welding" of the AIJ Standard for Allowable Stress Design of Steel Structures (2019). Butt welded joints (complete and partial penetration welds) take the allowable stress of the base metal being joined — for direct stress, from Eq. (5.1) (5.3(2)). Joints other than butt welded (fillet, plug, slot and flare welds and branch joints in steel pipe) take the allowable shear stress of the base metal, (5.3(1)).
- The stress is taken on the throat section. What 5.3 of the same Standard gives is the allowable stress on the throat section of an arc welded joint. The values assume filler metal matched to the steel grade and properly controlled welding.
- Welds in SS490 and SS540 cannot carry stress (proviso to 5.3 of the same Standard). The values in this table do not apply to them.
- Where dissimilar steels are welded, take the smaller of the allowable stresses of the two base metals (5.3(3) of the same Standard).
- The short-term value is 50 % above the long-term one (5.6 of the same Standard).
- Where the Standard writes "stress intensity", this page writes simply "stress".
